The rules in this guide come from public
authorities, so check them before you act: the
Dubai Roads and Transport Authority for
registration and export certificates,
Dubai Police for traffic fines,
Dubai
Customs for export declarations, and the
UAE government portal for general service
information. Fees and procedures change, so treat this article as a guide and
the authority's own page as the final word.
| Quick answer To sell your car in Dubai to an
export buyer, make sure the car is free of fines and bank liability, gather
your Emirates ID and Mulkiya, describe the car honestly with its service history,
agree who handles the RTA export steps, and release the car only after
payment has cleared. Export buyers pay most attention to specification,
mileage, history and condition.

Most advice on selling a car in the UAE is
written for one situation: a resident selling to another resident. That is a
fair description of most sales. It leaves out a second kind of buyer who is
very active in Dubai, the person or company who is buying the car to ship
abroad.
Export buyers shop differently. They are
often in another country, they cannot walk around the car, and they care about
things a local buyer may ignore. This guide explains how they think, what you
should prepare, what happens at the RTA when a car leaves the country, and how
to protect yourself while you sell.
One note on honesty. Source Vehicle runs the
Sell
My Car service, so we have an interest in this topic. We have tried
to write the guide so that it is useful whichever buyer or platform you use,
including ones that are not us.
WHAT SELLING TO AN EXPORT BUYER MEANS
An export buyer is someone who buys a vehicle
in the UAE to take it out of the country, whether that is one car for a
relative abroad or a dozen for a trading business. The car does not stay on UAE
roads, so the sale ends with the vehicle being de-registered, getting an export
certificate, and going through customs before it is loaded onto a ship.
For you as the seller, three things change
compared with a local sale. The paperwork has an extra stage at the end. The
buyer judges the car differently. And the question of who handles the export
steps has to be settled before you hand anything over.
WHAT THE SELL MY CAR PAGE IS FOR
Source Vehicle describes itself as an
automotive inventory and demand aggregation platform that connects
manufacturers, distributors, dealers and buyers across international markets.
The
Sell My Car page is where you tell the team
about a car you want to sell, and the page describes the service as covering
all types of cars.
Our team works from Showroom 392 at Dubai
Auto Zone in Ras Al Khor, the district where much of Dubai's vehicle export
trade takes place, and can be reached at support@sourcevehicle.com. We do not
publish fees, timelines or payment terms in this article, because they depend
on the car and the deal. Ask for them in writing before you agree to anything,
from us or from anyone else.
WHO THIS ROUTE SUITS, AND WHO IT DOES NOT
Selling to export buyers is not automatically
the better route. It depends on your car.
It tends to suit cars that people in other
countries actively look for. In our experience of the export market, heavy-duty
4x4s and commercial vehicles are the clearest case, and we explain why in our
guides to the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser 79, the Toyota Hilux and
the Nissan Patrol. It can also suit vehicles in GCC specification with a clear
service history.
A local sale may be a better fit if your car
is a niche model that few overseas buyers want, if you need the money in a few
days, or if the car has features that only matter to UAE buyers. A private
local sale, a dealer trade-in and an online car buying service are all
legitimate options, and a sensible seller gets at least one quote from more
than one route.

BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR CAR: A CHECKLIST
Cars that are ready to sell attract better
buyers and fewer awkward questions. Work through this list first.

its details
| Your own records, renewed
through the RTA if expired
|
| Emirates ID and passport

| Confirms the seller's
identity for the transfer or de-registration
| Your own documents
|
| Clear traffic fines
| Registration steps can be
blocked while fines are open
| Check with Dubai Police and
the RTA

| Buyers abroad rely on your
honesty
| Your own knowledge and any

If your car is still under a bank loan, settle
that first or agree the settlement sequence with the buyer and your bank in
writing. Do not release the car before the bank has confirmed it has been paid.
HOW EXPORT BUYERS JUDGE YOUR CAR
A local buyer often asks about price first.
An export buyer usually asks about specification first, because the same model
can be built differently for different markets. Cars made for the Gulf are the
reference point for most overseas buyers, and cars brought in from other
regions can be worth less. The difference is explained in our guide to
GCC spec versus export spec vehicles.
Price follows more than the model name.
Mileage, service history, repair record, who is selling and what the price
includes all move it, and we set them out in our guide on
why Dubai export car prices differ. Reading it
before you set an asking price will help you judge any offer you receive.
Buyers who purchase several vehicles at once,
such as businesses and operators, think in terms of fleets. Our guide to
fleet vehicles for sale in Dubai shows how
that side of the market works, and the
Source
Vehicle stockyard shows the kinds of vehicles buyers are looking at
right now.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE RTA WHEN A CAR IS EXPORTED
When a car leaves the UAE, its UAE
registration is cancelled and an export certificate is issued. Public guides
describe the broad steps in the same way: the registration is cancelled, the
plates are returned, and the export certificate allows the car to go through
customs and be shipped. A shipping agent usually handles the customs
declaration.
What the RTA asks for can vary with the state
of your registration. If it has expired, a technical inspection may be needed
first, and open fines or a bank liability can block the process. The Dubai
Roads and Transport Authority publishes current requirements and fees, and you
should check them before you plan the timing.
The most useful thing you can do as a seller
is agree, before payment, who completes these steps: you, the buyer, or a
representative acting for them. If it is not written down, it is easy for each
side to assume the other is doing it.
PROTECTING YOURSELF AS A SELLER
Most sales go smoothly, but a few habits
remove most of the risk.
Confirm payment in your own bank account
before you release the car, keys or Mulkiya. A screenshot of a transfer is not
the same as money received. Deal with identified people or companies and keep a
copy of their identification and the sale agreement. Check what is actually in
writing, including the price, the condition of the car, the handover date and
who completes the export steps.
After the sale, cancel your insurance and any
services tied to the car, such as Salik, so that you are not charged for a
vehicle that has left your hands. Keep copies of the de-registration or
transfer record, because it proves the car is no longer yours if a fine appears
later.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I sell my car in Dubai to an overseas buyer?
Yes. Buyers from other countries purchase
cars in the UAE every day. The car is de-registered, receives an export
certificate, clears customs and is shipped. The paperwork has more stages than
a local sale, so agree who handles each stage.
Can I sell any type of car through Source Vehicle?
The
Sell
My Car page describes the service as covering all types of cars.
Whether a specific car is suitable depends on its model, specification and
condition, so submit the details and ask the team directly.
Will an export buyer pay more than a local buyer?
Not always. Models with strong demand abroad
can attract competition from several markets, which helps the seller. A car
with limited overseas demand may sell better locally. Compare at least two
routes before deciding.
Does my car need to be free of a bank loan?
A car with an outstanding bank liability
generally cannot be exported until the loan is settled and the bank releases
its interest. Ask your bank for a settlement figure and agree the sequence with
the buyer in writing.
What documents do I usually need?
Typically the Mulkiya, your Emirates ID and
passport, proof that fines are cleared, and a bank settlement letter if the car
was financed. Requirements can differ for company-owned cars or sellers who are
not UAE residents, so confirm with the RTA or the buyer.
How long does it take to sell a car to an export buyer?
It depends on the car, the price and the
buyer, so we do not quote a fixed time. A fair asking price, clear photos and
complete paperwork shorten the process.
